Opposition wants to prevent BJP from a majority in Rajya Sabha: Modi

Aligarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday accused the opposition of trying to prevent the BJP from having a majority in the Rajya Sabha to stall strong anti-corruption laws.

He said demonetisation brought out the “loot” of the past 70 years

Taking a dig at the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance without naming it, he said: “These people have not come together to fight election. They have come together because they feel if we (BJP) get a majority in the Rajya Sabha, we will make such laws that there will be no space left for thieves and the corrupt.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party has a majority in the Lok Sabha but not in the Rajya Sabha.

Addressing an election rally ahead of Uttar Pradesh elections starting on February 11, Modi said Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was scared of the BJP.

“To save himself, he is holding on to other people,” Modi said, obviously referring to the Samajwadi-Congress tie-up.

“People of Uttar Pradesh want justice. This is our fight to get justice for you.”

Citing reason for the vocal opposition hostile to him in particular, the prime minister said, “I’m tightening screws to teach those supporting blackmoney a lesson. Political opponents are angry with me as I’m tightening screws on wrong doers,” said Modi amid thunderous applause.

He said demonetisation brought out the “loot” of the past 70 years.

“I said on November 8, notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 will be banned. It created a storm. Those who had stacks of money were forced to put it in banks,” Modi said.

“For 70 years, the nation was looted… overnight, they were forced to deposit it in banks. They thought Modi is not prepared, and depositing the money in banks will make it white.

“But they did not know we had arrangements to trace the source of money deposited in banks.

“We are fighting so that the money is utilized for the poor,” he added.

He said that Uttar Pradesh does not need `SCAM’ and that was the reason that people needs a BJP Government that is devoted to development, welfare of poor and elderly.

“Vikas signifies V for ‘vidyut’, K for ‘kanoon vyawastha’ and S for ‘sadak’,” three major pillars of development, said the prime minister.
