SC refuses to stay Parrikar’s oath-taking ceremony, orders floor test

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the oath-taking of BJP’s chief minister candidate Manohar Parrikar and ordered a floor test to be held in the Goa Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

The Congress has 17 legislators followed by BJP with 13

Parrikar will take oath as 13th chief minister of Goa on March 14, 2017. He quit as the defence minister of India, a post he had been holding since November 2014.

Earleir, amidst heated arguments on a petition filed by the Congress challenging the Goa governor’s decision to invite the BJP to form government in the coastal state of Goa, a special bench headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar said in its ruling, “You (Congress) don’t have the numbers and that’s why you didn’t claim to form government… You haven’t demonstrated before the governor that number is in your favour.”

The Apex Court court directed Goa governor Mridula Sinha to conduct a floor test for the Manohar Parikar led BJP coalition government at 11 AM on March 16.

The Congress has 17 legislators followed by BJP with 13, Goa Forward Party (GFP) and the Maharashtravadi Gomantak Party (MGP) with three each, three Independents and Nationalist Congress Party (one).

It may be mentioned here that on Sunday, the BJP said it has enlisted the support of three members each of the GFP and MGP, besides two Independents to reach the magic number of 21 MLAs needed for majority in the 40-member House.
