Major poaching racket busted after raid at ex-Colonel’s house in Meerut

Meerut: In a 17-hour-long joint raid conducted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the state forest department, a major poaching racket was busted with the recovery of at least 117 kg blue-bull (nilgai) meat, animal skin, ivory and 40 guns from the residence of a retired Army Colonel.

The said raid was carried out by the DRI official in connection with a disproportionate assets case

According to a senior forest department official, a team of DRI officials reached the Civil Lines residence of Colonel (retired) Devindra Kumar on Saturday afternoon and continued with the raid continued till early Sunday morning.

It may be mentioned here that retired Army Colonel’s son Prashant Bishnoi is a national-level shooter.

The said raid was carried out by the DRI official in connection with a disproportionate assets case.

However, during the raid, besides Rs one crore in cash, 117 kg meat of blue-bull, 40 guns with large qunatity of ammunition, five skulls of deer, horns of sambar and black buck, animal skin including that of leopard and ivory were seized from a makeshift warehouse in Kumar’s residence.

The forest official said that the meat of blue bull was recovered from a refrigerator and its sample has been sent to laboratory for testing. “Once the report comes, action will be initiated against the retired Army official under relevant sections of the Wildlige Act,” said the forest official.
