Three army jawans injured in terrorist attack, encounter on in Shopian

Srinagar: A civilian driver was killed and three soldiers were injured on Thursday when terrorists ambushed their vehicle in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, officials said.

The operation against terrorists is under way

Army spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia said, .”Following the ambush, exchange of fire occurred between a returning column in Imam Sahib area. The operation against terrorists is under way,” he said.

Sources said that the security forces have managed to lay seige of the area where two to three of the terrorists responsible for attack on the army vehicle are believed to hiding. “A fierce encounter is on and security forces are confident of neutralising the trapped terrorists,” said a police official.

The police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, Nazir Ahmad, succumbed to his injuries.

Earlier in the day, security forces had launched a massive anti-terror operation in the same district, in the wake of a surge in terrorist-related incidents in the past few days.

They had cordoned off almost two dozen villages in the district today and are in the process of conducting a huge search operation.

The operation, described by a senior police officer as “unprecedented”, started early in the day and involved over 3,000 soldiers, paramilitary troopers and police personnel.

They carried out searches in some 20 villages including Turkwangam and Sugan where terrorists had been reportedly seen moving about freely in recent days.

Government sources said helicopters and drones were also used in the operation.

The security forces faced stone pelting from villagers at three places. The crowds were dispersed with tear smoke.

There was no official word on any arrests made during the searches although Thursday’s was the biggest search operation by security forces since last year’s summer unrest.

“Such operations will continue till we are able to completely sanitize (rid areas of terrorists) in south Kashmir.”
