Fierce encounter in J&K’s Budgam on with three to four trapped terrorists

Srinagar: A fresh encounter broke out on Tuesday night between security forces and terrorists in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

The security forces cordoned off the area and started a search operation

A senior police official said that on receiving specific information about the presence of some terrorists in Radpug village of Mahagam area in Budgam, the security forces cordoned off the area and started a search operation when three to four terrorists hiding in the area, started firing at the security forces to break free from the security cordon and escape.

“This triggered a fierce encounter between the joint security team comprising the 2nd Rashtriya Rifles, the CRPF’s 176 Battalion and the SOG of the state police,” said the police official.

Sources said that the trapped terrorists are believed to be members of break-away group of terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen headed by Zakir Musa, who advocates for establishing Islamic caliphate in the Kashmir valley.

It was also claimed that before the encounter broke out, some family members of the trapped terrorists appealed to them from the local mosque, using the public address system to lay arms and surrender before the security forces. “The trapped terrorists did not pay heed to the appeals of their family members and instead started firing at the security forces to break the cordon and escape,” said sources.

Till reports last came in the encounter was on with security reinforcement having reached the encounter site to further strengthen the cordon and plug all possible escape routes.
