Mayawati threatens to resign from RS, BJP objects to her conduct

New Delhi: Irked by the chair’s refusal to allow her speak beyond the stipulated time in the House, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday threatened to resign from the Rajya Sabha.

I have decided to resign as a Rajya Sabha member

During the zero hour, she was speaking on the issues related to the poor and downtrodden and when the chair asked her to take her seat as the time elapsed, she got irritated and threatened to quit her seat saying she was not being allowed to raise the issue of atrocities on Dalits.

“I have come to this House to be the voice of the Dalits and backwards — to raise their issues. But when I am not allowed to speak then why should I stay here,” she said while staging a walk out from the Upper House.

Strongly objecting to her behavior, the parliamentary affairs minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “she was threatening the chair and this cannot be tolerated.”

He also said that it was the drubbing that her party suffered during the recent UP assembly polls that she was unable to digest and hence trying to play the victim card. “She was not raising any issues related to the oppressed class and instead only indulging in petty politics,” said Naqvi.

As expected, Mayawati had the ready support of leader of opposition Gulam Nabi Azad who also alleged that the dalits, minorities and the poor sections of the sociiety were at the receiving end under the present dispensation. He said that the Prime Minister had assured in the all-party meeting that opposition benches would be welcomed to raise and discuss any issue they intend to.

He said that Mayawati was fully justified when she staged a walkout.

After registering his protest, Azad along with his party members also staged a walk-out expressing solidarity with the BSP chief.

To this, the parliamentary affairs minister said that his party was ready to discuss all relevant issues and his government was fully prepared to answer to all the queries raised which the opposition intends to raise.

Later taking to media persons, Mayawati referred to the issues raised by her in the House and said, “Since I was not allowed to speak, I have decided to resign as a Rajya Sabha member today (Tuesday).”

Reacting to her announcement to quit the seat, senior BJP leader Dr Subramaniam Swamy said, “If she resigns, the seat will come to us as we have more than 70 per cent of Assembly strength in the state legislature.” He also pointed out that Mayawati’s term in the Rajya Sabha was also coming to an end early next year and going by her party strength in UP Assembly, it is not possible for her to enter the house again.
