Seven Amarnath pilgrims killed, many injured in Kashmir terror attack

Anantnag: Seven Amarnath pilgrims were killed and 15 others injured on Monday when a bus carrying 50 Amarnath yatris was ambushed by terrorists in Batingoo area of Anantnag district on Monday night around 8.30 pm.

Condition of some of the injured pilgrims is stated to be critical

A senior police official confirmed the toll and said 15 others were injured, including security men.

Official death toll has been put at six.

The police official said that five of those killed were women.

“A group of heavily armed terrorists today attacked police parties in Batengoo and Khanabal area of the district (Anantnag). Unfortunately, a pilgrim bus was caught in the crossfire leading to the death of six yatris and injuring 12 others,” said Muneer Khan.

Condition of some of the injured pilgrims is stated to be critical, said an official.

The terrorist attack occurred when the bus carrying pilgrims back from Baltal after performing the yatra.

A CRPF statement said the bus was not part of the official yatra and not registered with the Amarnath Shrine Board.

Immediately after the incident a senior CRPF official said, “troops of of 90 Bn and 40 Bn CRPF have been rushed to the spot.”

Senior minister in the Mehbooba Mufti-led government Nayeem Akhtar termed the attack a “dark patch in the history of Kashmir”.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah was quick to react and said: “The attack cannot be condemned strongly enough.”

Meanwhile, sources said that there were three-motorcycle borne terrorists who managed to escape after the attack. “We have cordoned off the area, and an intensive search operation is on to nab the terrorists responsible for the dastardly act,” said a police official.
