Top LeT terrorist Bashir Lashkari, associate killed in Anantnag

Srinagar: What could be termed as a major success for the security forces, a top Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Bashir Lashkari, active in the Kashmir valley was gunned down along with an associate on Saturday following a fierce two-hours long gun-battle in Anantnag district.

To avoid an collateral damage, the security forces used explosives to blast the house in which the LeT terrorists were hiding. “But before that, the security forces managed to rescue at least 17 locals from the place of encounter,” said a senior police official.

However, two civilians, including a woman, were also killed in the cross-fire between security forces and the hiding terrorists in Brenthi Batapora village in Anantnag district.

The killed civilians were part of a stone pelting crowd of protesters attacking the security forces during the operation, said the police official.

Giving details of the operation, the police official said that the gunfire exchanges at the shootout site in Brenthi Batapora village stopped after the house was blasted, indicating that the hiding terrorists were eliminated.

Though the encounter has come to an end, a search operation in the area is going on to ensure there are no other terrorists hiding in the vicinity.

The police official said that the other slain terrorists is believed to be Azad Ahmed Malik alias Tada who belonged to Arwani village area of Anantnag.

The inspector General of Srinagar, Muneer Ahmad Khan said that the audio clip available with the security forces from the encounter site clearly show how the holed-up terrorists were coercing locals to provide human shield for enabling them to escape. “We do not like locals to suffer injury or casualty but the terrorists do. So, it is our appeal to the locals to keep away from such encounter site to avoid any kind of injury or fatality,” said the police official.

He said that additional forces were rushed to the spot, including paramilitary troops and a helicopter, to secure the safe release of the civilians trapped in the house where the terrorists were holed-up.
