Court allows 10-day custody to NIA for sustained interrogation of Watali

New Delhi: A court here on Friday allowed the NIA to quiz Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, arrested on charges of receiving funds from Pakistan to sponsor terror activities and stone-pelting in Kashmir, till August 28.

Watali is known to be very close to Pakistani ISI officials and leaders

During the in-camera proceedings, District Judge Poonam Bamba remanded Watali to the National Investigation Agency’s custody for 10 days. He was arrested on Thursday.

In July, the agency arrested seven separatist leaders for their alleged involvement in Pakistan-funded unrest and terrorism in the Kashmir valley.

Watali is known to be very close to Pakistani ISI officials and leaders, besides the Pakistan supported separatists in the valley. Watali’s close [proximity with the mainstream politicians in Kashmir is also known to one and all, said an official of the NIA.

Sources said that Watali has been under the NIA scanner for quite some time and only last month the investigating agency had summoned him on multiple occassion for questioning at its Delhi headquarters before being arrest.

It may be mentioned here that in the recent raids conducted by the NIA at 12 odd locations in the Kahsmir valley, the NIA recovered clinching evidence against Watali’s invlovement in terror funding and other unlawful activities.
