Eight security men martyred, three terrorists killed in J&K’s Pulwama

Srinagar: Eight security personnel, including four CRPF men, were martyred when terrorists carried out a suicide attack on a district police complex in south Kashmir’s Pulwama on Saturday, triggering a fierce gunfight in which three terrorists were killed.

According to a senior police official, terrorists attack took place at the crack of dawn when heavily armed foreign terrorists entered the police complex in Pulwama district.

He said that the police, CRPF and Army personnel quickly swung into action and succeeded in cornering the terrorists and managed to take out safely the family members of the police personnel living within the complex.

“Once the family members of the police personnel were safely evacuated, a fierce encounter with the terrorists broke out and it lasted till evening when all the three terrorists were neutralised,” said the police official.

He said that it certainly a sad day for the security forces as they sufferred eight casualty.

General officer Commanding of Srinagar-based XV Corps, Lt Gen JS Sandhu said that it was a “fidayeen” (suicide) attack.

Among those killed four were from the CRPF, one was a constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police and three were Special Police Officers working with the state police.

The police official said that two of the four CRPF personnel were killed at the fag end of the operation when they were defusing one of the improvised explosive devices planted by the terrorists.

The Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) has owned responsibility for the attack.

A JeM spokesman, identifying himself as Hassan Shah, phoned a local news agency to own responsibility for the attack.

The authorities have suspended internet services in Pulwama district as a precautionary measure.

Police said that though the operation inside the district police lines complex had stopped, searches were being conducted inside the complex.
