Two soldiers martyred, three injured in encounter with terrorists in JK’s Shopian

Srinagar: Two army men including a captain were martyred and three others injured on Saturday in an ongoing fierce encounter between the security forces and terrorists holed-up in a village in Shopian district of South Kashmir.

The encounter broke out in Awneera village of Shopian after security forces including the army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles, SOG of the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force, on receiving intelligence inputs that two to three terrorists were hiding in the village, said a police official.

He said that when a cordon was laid and the area surrounded by the security forces, the hidinmg terrorists resorted to heavy firing to break the security cordon and escape.

In the ensuing encounter, five soldiers were injured and were evacuated to the 92 Base Hospital of the Army where two among them succumbed to their injuries.

He said that some of the villagers come out resorted to stone-pelting at the security forces to break the cordon around the village.

The security forces used pellet guns to disperse the crowd and in the clashes seven civilians sustained pellet injuries and have been shifted to hospital for treatment.
