Restrictions imposed in parts of Srinagar

Srinagar: Restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar city on Friday to prevent protests against the series of raids conducted by the NIA against a number of Hurriyat leaders who were allegedly involved in receiving money through hawala route to fund terrorist activities in the Kashmir valley.

Life in the Valley was partially affected due to the protest shutdown call

The separatist leaders had also given call to stage protest against killings of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, said a police official.

The restrictions were imposed in the areas of Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, MR Gunj and Safa Kadal.

Authorities also decided not to allow Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area.

As separatist leader, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq had called for the protests, authorities placed him under house arrest to prevent his participation.

Already the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik was arrested on Thursday and has been lodged in the Srinagar Central Jail.

Life in the Valley was partially affected due to the protest shutdown call.

Shops, public transport and other businesses remained closed in the five areas where restrictions were imposed.
