Srinagar: Alert security forces on Sunday averted a major terror attack when they killed three Pakistani ‘fidayeen’ in a fierce gunfight in a forested area near the border town of Uri in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

He said that initially one of the hiding terrorists was eliminated

According to a senior police official, “all three Pakistani fidayeen terrorists were killed in Uri area of Baramulla district.”

Confirming the development, state Director General of Police SP Vaid said that the slain terrorists had planned a major suicide strike and their elimination has averted the same.

The police official said that there were specific intelligence inputs about a possible fidayeen attack. “Subsequently our security forces launched an operation in Kaghi forest area and as the security cordon closed in, the heavily armed terrorists resorted to indiscriminate firing triggering a fierce encounter,” said the police official.

He said that initially one of the hiding terrorists was eliminated and thereafter the encounter with the remaining terrorists continued for some time before the firing from the side of hiding terrorists stopped.

“Our forces started the search after some time and discovered bodies of two more terrorits but the search in the area is on as possibilities of one or two terrorists from the same group still hiding in the forest cannot be ruled out,” said the official.

The police official said that investigation were on to ascertain whether the slain terrorists had infiltrated recently from Pakistan or some time back.
