Big setback for Sasikala camp as EC gives ruling AIADMK faction ‘two leaves’ symbol

Chennai: The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday decided to allot the “two leaves” symbol of the AIADMK faction led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, an AIADMK leader said.

EC order has paved the way for the poll body to announce the RK Nagar assembly bypoll

Sources said that the EC has acknowledged the EPS-OPS group as the ‘real’ AIADMK and held that it shall be entitled to use the ‘two-leaves’ poll symbol in all future elections.

Needless to mention that the order is a big setback to the other two factions led by VK Sasikala-backed TTV Dhinakaran and Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar as both of the factions had staked claim to the ‘two leaves’ symbol.

The much-awaited EC order has paved the way for the poll body to announce the RK Nagar assembly bypoll.

It may be mentioned here that the Madras high court had earlier ordered EC to conduct the bypoll, cancelled in April this year over large-scale attempts by all parties to bribe voters, by December 30.

“We are happy with the EC decision. We are waiting to get the full order,” former MP and party spokesperson KC Palaniswamy said.

On the other hand, reacting to the development, TTV Dinakaran said that the EC had not been neutral and alleged that the Centre had played a major role in the decision by the poll panel.
