New Congress President to be elected on Dececember 16, announces CWC

New Delhi: The Congress party on Monday announced elections to choose the next party president on December 16 “if necessary”, and a new Congress President will be announced on December 19.

The nominations will be scrutinised on December 5

The schedule for election was approved by the Congress Working Committee on Monday.

The election will be notified on December 1, and the last date for filing nominations is December 4.

The nominations will be scrutinised on December 5, and last date for withdrawing nominations is December 11.

A statement announcing the dates said the date of poll would be December 16 “if necessary”.

The election is set to bring party Vice President Rahul Gandhi as the next President of the party. Sonia Gandhi is the current Congress President.

Earlier on Monday, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) met here to chart out a schedule for the election of the Congress President which will see the elevation of Vice President Rahul Gandhi to the party’s top post.

The meeting was attended by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with senior party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Ahmed Patel, P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Sushilkumar Shinde and Karan Singh.

On the last day of filing the nomination, if no other contestant files against Rahul Gandhi, then he will be declared President unopposed.

The Congress had earlier set a deadline to complete the organisational elections by October-end.
