Soldier martyred, 3 civilians killed in J&K’s Kulgam gunfight with terrorists

Srinagar: A soldier was martyred and three civilians killed as terrorists clashed with security forces on Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, triggering violent street protests.

There was also no official word on the death of the hiding terrorists

According to a senior police official, amid impediments created by the locals in carrying out the operation against the hiding terrorists whose numbers is believed to be between three and four, the security forces finally used heavy explosives to destroy the house in which the terrorists were holed up.

The police official said, “the terrorists trapped in the house in Wani Mohalla in Khudwani area and were believed to be top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commanders.”

He said that by the time it was decided to blow the house with heavy explosives, one soldier was martyred and three civilians killed.

Apart from it, two security personnel and over 40 civilians were injured in the ongoing operation, said the police official adding that the injured jawans were being treated at the Army’s 92 base hospital in Srinagar.

As per latest reports, the house where the terrorists were hiding was destroyed while two others caught fire when the security forces used heavy explosives.

It is still unclear as to how many terrorists have been neutralised after the house in which they all were hiding has been blown off.

There was also no official word on the death of the hiding terrorists.

However, sources said that all the terrorists have been killed and the same would be confirmed once the rubble of the destroyed house is cleared.

The police official said that the civilian casualties occurred when locals came out of their homes during the gun battle and pelted stones at the security personnel to provide escape route to the hiding terrorists.

Authorities ordered closure of all schools and colleges in Kulgam and Internet services have been suspended in south Kashmir.

Meanwhile, search and cordon operations are underway in the Valley.
