Security forces kill four IS terrorists in J&K’s Anantnag encounter

Srinagar: Security forces on Friday gunned down four terrorists belonging to the Islamic State terror group in a fierce encounter in Anantnag district.

This is the first official confirmation of any IS terrorist being killed in Kashmir

Confirming the report, Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid tweeted: “The slain terrorists were reportedly affiliated to Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK).”

It may be mentioned here that this is the first official confirmation of any IS terrorist being killed in Kashmir.

Also it was the first gunfight between the security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir after it was placed under Governor’s rule.

It is pertinent to recall that on its website in 2017 the Islamic State had said that its Indian affiliate, Ansar Gazwatul Hind was being headed by Zakir Musa, a Kashmiri terrorist who was earlier associated with Hizbul Mujahideen.

In the Friday’s encounter, a civilian was killed and a policeman of the state police was martyred.

According to a senior police offiical, the encounter erupted in Srigufwara area early in the day after information about the four to five terrorits holed up in a house in Khiram village was received by the security forces.

He said that as the cordon was tightened, the holed up terrorists fired to break the security cordon and escape but security forces retaliated, triggering a fierce encounter in which four terrorists were neutralised.

“Though the encounter has come to an end, search operations were on in the area,” said the police official.

State DGP SP Vaid said: “The bodies of the slain terrorists can be seen inside the house where they were hiding. We are retrieving the bodies.”

The four terrorists killed have been identified as ISJK chief Dawood Salafi alias Burhan from HMT Srinagar, Majeed Manzoor from Talangam village in Pulwama district, Adil Hassan Mir and Ashraf Itoo, both from Srigufwara in Anantnag.

The police official said that the house owners also came in the line of fire. While the husband Muhammad Yusuf was killed, his wife Hafeeza sustained a gunshot injury and was shifted to hospital for treatment.

Of the four militants killed, one has been identified as Majeed Manzoor from Talangam village in Pulwama district while another was from the HMT area in Srinagar. The other two are yet to be identified.

A member of the special operations group (SOG) of the state police was also killed during the operation, while three other security personnel were injured, the police said.

Earlier dozens of youth had started pelting stones at the security forces some distance from the encounter site as the gun battle progressed.

Authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in the district to check the spread of any kind of rumours.
