Govt appoints Nageswar Rao as interim CBI director; Verma, Asthana sent on leave

New Delhi: Amid raging tussle between the top two Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers Alok Verma and special director Rakesh Asthana, the appointments committee of the Cabinet sent both the officers on leave and appointed M Nageswar Rao as interim director.

Rao hails from Warangal district in Telangana

In an order by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions dated 23 October 2018, Verma and Asthana have been sent on leave and as an interim arrangement, a 1986 batch Indian Police Service officer of the Orissa cadre, Nageswara Rao has been appointed to head the premier investigating agency with immediate effect.

Rao hails from Warangal district in Telangana.

The feud between the two top men came out in open after the CBI lodged an FIR against Asthana on a complaint by Sathish Sana, a witness in the case of meat exporter Moin Qureshi, who is facing a number of cases of money laundering and corruption.

Sana has claimed that he paid Rs 3 crore to Asthana through a Dubai-based middleman Manoj Prasad and his brother, Somesh Prasad, to save him in the case.

Notably, the aforementioned case was being examined by a special investigation team (SIT) headed by Asthana.

Meanwhile, in yet another major development, the CBI headquarters were sealed on Wednesday. Apart from selected few, officers in general are not being allowed to enter the premises.
