JeM chief Mazood Azhar’s nephew among two terrorists killed in J&K’s Tral

Srinagar: Security forces on Tuesday succeeded in killing at least two terrorists believed to be affiliated to Pakistan based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in a fierce encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Tral area.

The material seized from the encounter site showed that the terrorists belonged to JeM

A senior police official said that though the exchange of fire at Chaanketaar village in Pulwama’s Tral had stopped, the security forces were conducting search operation to look for the presence of more terrorists.

The police official said that an M-4 carbine was recovered from the encounter site.

The recovered M-4 rifle is suspected to have been used for carrying out sniper attacks on the security forces, said the police official.

It may be recalled that last week, an Army jawan and a Seema Shashtra Bal personnel were killed by terrorists in sniper attacks in Tral area of Pulwama district.

The police official said that the house in which the terrorists were hiding was destroyed after it caught fire. “As the house caught fire, the hiding terrorists moved to the nearby forest area where they engaged in a day-long fierce encounter with the security forces,” said the police official.

He said that the encounter had started after the security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Chaanketaar village of Tral in south Kashmir district in the afternoon after receiving a tip-off that the terrorists were present in the area.

Bodies of two terrorists have been recovered from the encounter site, said the police official adding that the material seized from the encounter site showed that the terrorists belonged to JeM.

Reports said that one of those killed was the nephew of JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar.

Later in the night, JeM in a statement mailed to the local GNS news agency said a slain terrorist was the nephew of JeM’s Pakistan-based chief Masood Azhar.

JeM has identified the slain terrorist as Muhammad Usman while the second neutralised terrorist has been identified as a local, Showkat Ahmad.
