Three terrorists including two Pakistanis killed in J&K’s Kulgam encounter

Srinagar: Three terrorists were shot dead and two soldiers were injured during a fierce encounter with security forces in Kulgam district in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

Authorities have suspended both mobile telephone and internet services in Kulgam

A senior police official said that a joint operation was launched by the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), the state police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) after receiving information about the presence of some terrorists in a house in Laroo village of Kulgam district.

The police official said that as the cordon around the hiding terrorists was tightened, they fired at the security forces to break free and escape. “With security forces responding to terrorists fire, an encounter broke out in which three terrorists were neutralised,” said the police official.

He said that among three terrorists killed, two were Pakistanis while the third was a local.

A top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, identified as Sheeraz Moulvi, was among the three terrorists killed in the encounter, said an official.

However, two others managed to escape, said sources.

After the encounter ended, a civilian got killed and around a dozen others were injured when an explosion occurred at the gunfight site.

The police official said that despite repeated warnings not to visit the gunfight site till it was declared safe, the civilians ignored police instructions and went ahead when the explosion occurred.

Authorities have suspended both mobile telephone and internet services in Kulgam district as precautionary measure.
