Six terrorists killed in J&K’s Anantnag encounter, operation continues

Srinagar: In a major crackdown against terror groups active in the Kashmir valley, security forces on Friday morning succeeded in killing at least six terrorists including a top Lashmar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist following a fierce encounter in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.

All the six neutralised terrorists were believed to be locals

A senior police official said that the security forces upon receiving a tip-off about presence of some terrorists in Sekipora village of Anantnag, began a cordon and search operation in wee hours on Friday.

As the security cordon comprising 3 Rashtriya Rifles and the SOG of the state police tightened, the hiding terrorists fired at the forces, triggering an encounter in which six terrorists were gunned down.

Confirming the development, Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that weapons and warlike stores have been recovered from the encounter site.

A top LeT commander, Azad Malik and his associate Basit Mir were among the six terrorists killed in encounter, said a police official.

The police official said that Azad Malik was among the three terrorists involved in assassination of senior journalist and editor of Rising Kashmir Syed Shujaat Bukhari in Srinagar.

Bukhari and his two guards were killed after masked gunmen indiscriminately fired upon them outside Rising Kashmir office in Srinagar’s Press Enclave on June 14.
