Six terrorists killed, soldier martyred in J&K’s Shopian encounter

Srinagar: A soldier was martyred during a fierce encounter on Sunday in which six Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were killed in South Kashmir’s Shopian district.

During the course of encounter, a local was also killed when a group of villagers tried to thwart the operation that had started late on Saturday night and ended on Sunday after six terrorists were neutralised, said a police official.

He said that the martyred soldier was from the territorial army. Another sustained injuries during a joint operation by the Rashtriya Rifles, special operations group (SOG) of the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force, an Army spokesman said.

The operation against the terrorists began late on Saturday following a tip off received by the security forces about presence of some terrorists in Batgund village in Shopian district.

The police official said that as the cordon was tightened around the hold-up terrorists, they started firing, triggering the encounter that continued for hours.

He said that the security personnel through the night chased out terrorists from their hideouts and gunned them down along the village fields.

At day break and news of the encounter spread, villagers put up an intense protest, in which two civilian suffered bullet injuries, leading to the death of one. Noman Ashraf Bhat died, the police officer said.

Besides death of one civilian, some protesters received pellet injuries and were admitted to hospital, added the police official.

The police official also said that the terrorists killed in the encounter were involved in civilian killings in the valley.

He said that one of the neutralised terrorist was a Pakistani and was involved in the recent killed a teenager.

The neutralised Pakistani terrorist had also posted a video showing a blood-soaked knife, and threatened of more killings.

Large quantity of arms and ammunition including six rifles were recovered from the encounter site.
