Top LeT terrorist Naveed Jatt gunned down in J&K’s Budgam encounter

Srinagar: A top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist, Naveed Jatt, who was wanted for the murder of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari, was killed on Wednesday in a fierce encounter with the security forces Badgam district of South Kashmir.

A senior police official said that Naveed Jatt, alias Abu Hanzullah, was among the two terrorists killed in the gunfight that broke out earlier in the day during a cordon and search operation in Kuthpora village of Budgam district.

He said that three security personnel were also injured in the operation.

The slain LeT terrorist Naveed Jatt was a Pakistani national and was from Multan. He had escaped from police custody on February 6, while being taken for a medical check-up to a hospital from the Srinagar Central Jail.

While escaping from the police custody, Jatt and his facilitators had killed two policeman.

Jatt was among the top LeT terrorists wanted by the security forces and had given the security forces a slip on a couple of occasion during encounters in the Kashmir valley. However, luck ran out for Jatt on Wednesday when he along with a local terrorists were neutralised by the security forces, said a police official.

Naveed Jatt along with two local terrorists were responsible for killing Bukhari, editor-in-chief of News daily Rising Kashmir on 14 June.

Jatt was one of the three bike-borne individuals who had gunned down Bukhari along with two of his guards in the Press Enclave area in Srinagar.

The killing of Jatt is seen as a big success for the security forces in their anti-terrorist operations.

The police official said that large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from the encounter site by the security where search operation still continues.

As a precautionary measure, authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in Badgam and Pulwama districts.
