3 terrorists killed, soldier martyred and 7 civilians dead in J&K gunfight, clashes

Srinagar: Eleven people were killed on Saturday in a gunfight with terrorists and subsequent clashes in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

More than 35 protesters and stone pelters have been injured in the clashes

The gunfight erupted in Sirnoo village as security personnel surrounded the area after receiving a tip-off about terrorists holed up in the area.

Three terrorists including a top Hizbul commander, Zahoor Thokar, an Army deserter was among the terrorists neutralised by the security forces.

It may be mentioned here that Thokar was responsible for the killing of rifleman Aurangzeb.

However, in the encounter that lasted for nearly an hour, two soldiers were injured and one of them succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, said an official.

Immediately after the encounter, scores of violent civilian protesters clashed with the security forces who used firearms and pellets to control the violent mob.

Two locals were declared brought dead in a district hospital where they were taken for treatment of gun shot injuries. Four other civilian protesters succumbed to their wounds, authorities said.

The seventh civilian died in a hospital in Srinagar, said a police official.

According to reports from the area, more than 35 protesters and stone pelters have been injured in the clashes.  Condition of three of them is said to be critical, said the police official.

To maintain peace in the area, the authorities have imposed curfew in Pulwama town and deployed additional security personnel to maintain law and order.

Mobile internet services were suspended in the district as a precautionary measure.
