The hiding terrorists resorted to indiscriminate firing, triggering a fierce encounter

A senior police official said that on receiving specific input about presence of some terrorists in Pulwama’s Kharpora Sirnoo area, a cordon and search operation was jointly launched by the Rashtriya Rfiles, the CRPF and th SOG of the state police.

As the security cordon tightened, the terrorists hiding in an open field resorted to indiscriminate firing, triggering a fierce encounter, said the police official.

He said that one of the neutralised terrorists, Zahoor Ahmed Thokar, was earlier a soldier in the Indian Army. He fled from an Army camp with an AK-47 last year and was reportedly involved in the killing of rifleman Aurangzeb.

As the reports of encounter spread, locals assembled near the encounter site and started pelting stones at the security forces.

In order to disperse the stone pelters and the violent protesters, the security forces resort to tear-gas shelling and firing.

Two locals sustained gun shot injuries in the clashes and were shifted to a hospital where they both were declared dead on arrival.

Three other youths were also injured in the clashes, said the police official.

As a precautionary measure, the authorities have suspended mobile internet in Pulwama, added the police official.
