Encounter underway in J&K’s Kulgam, one terrorists killed

Srinagar: One terrorists was killed in an encounter that broke out between security forces and holed-up terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday.

He said that as a precautionary measure, authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in Kulgam district

According to a senior police official, on receiving specific information about the presence of some terrorists in Kulgam district’s Tazipora village on Tuesday evening, security forces including 9 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), special Operations Group (SOG) of the state police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) carried out a cordon and search operation.

He said that the cordon and search operation was started late on Tuesday evening and as the security forces came close to the house where the terrorists were hiding, they fired triggering an encounter which still continues.

The police official said that till reports last came in, heavy firing exchanges was underway between holed-up terrorists and the security forces.

He said that as a precautionary measure, authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in Kulgam district.

On the other, hand, at least 50 violent stone pelters were injured when the security forces resorted to firing to keep them away from the encounter site. “A large number of violent stone pelters assembled near the encounter site to thwart the ongoing operation by resorting to heavy stone pelting and left with no other option, the security forces resorted to firing pellets in which around 50 odd people were injured,” said an official.
