Nizamuddin Tablighi HQ evacuated, 24 positive cases among 1,033 evacuees

New Delhi: Tablighi Jamaat’s international headquarters Nizamuddin Markaz in southwest Delhi, where around 1,400 persons had congregated in violation of orders restricting assembly of 50 or more persons at a particular time, were finally made to evacuate but not before 24 of them were tested corona positive.

Around 200 persons from the complex were admitted in various hospitals in Delhi

These patients include 10 Malaysians. Reports of several other samples are yet to arrive.

The Delhi police on Monday night, evcauated 100 suspected coronavirus cases from the religious complex in buses and were kept in isolation in Narela area of Delhi.

However, those who were ill were admitted in various hospitals.

Six of the persons who returned to Telangana from the Tablighi HQ have since died from the coronavirus infection.
The gravity of situation could be gauged from the fact that positive cases were reported from J&K, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These were the states where people who had retured after participating in the Tablighi jammat at Nizamuddin, said an official.

According to Tamil Nadu state Health Minister C Vijayabaskar, seven new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the state taking the total to 74.

Out of the seven male patients, five (three form Villupuram, two from Madurai) of them had travel history to Delhi.

Of the remaining two, one person is a co-worker of a COVID-19 patient and the other had travelled to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

On Monday, the state reported a sudden spike in Coronavirus infected cases with 17 persons testing positive.

Government officials said about 1,500 persons had attended the conference from Tamil Nadu and the virus infection on the members of this group resulted in the spike.

The health department officials statewide are screening about 1,000 persons who have returned after attending the conference.

The two Thai nationals also tested positive for Coronavirus and have been admitted to hospital in Erode.

In Andhra Pradesh, 17 persons were tested positive since Monday night. Majority of them had attended Tablighi Jamaat meeting in Delhi, officials said on Tuesday.

With this the number of total cases in the state rose to 40.

According to medical bulletin by the health department, 14 of the 17 new positive cases had either attended the meeting at Delhi or the contacts of those who attended the meet. Almost all of them are from Prakasam and Guntur districts.

A returnee from Madina (Saudi Arabia) and two contacts of a Karnataka man who had returned from Mecca also tested positive.

More details of these patients are currently being traced and will be updated soon, it said.

The family of a person who died on Monday after attending the Islamic religious congregation has been kept in isolation even as those who returned to their homes in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana were being tracked.

A total of 194 people remain quarantined in Telengana while 981 persons in Tamil Nadu have been identified for screening.

As per information available, there were around 250 foreign nationals who had participated at the jamaat at Tablighi HQ, including around 200 from Indonesia, 30 from Thailand, 10-15 from Kyrgyzstan, and Malaysia.

The religious group’s international headquarters, called Nizamuddin Markaz, is situated in the middle of Nizamuddin colony in southwest Delhi, from where it originally started. It has centres in over 200 countries.

On Saturday and Sunday, around 200 persons from the complex were admitted in various hospitals in Delhi as a precautionary measure. Out of these 200, six of those admitted in Lok Nayak Jaiprakash hospital had returned a coronavirus positive report.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said on Tuesday that 24 people have been found corona positive in the Nizamuddin markaz that has turned into ground zero of the new cases spiralling out of control following an ijtima (conregation) in mid-March.

Giving details of the case reported in Nizamuddin, Jain said that the government is not certain of the number but it is estimated that 1,500-1,700 people had assembled at the Markaz building.

The Delhi Health Minister said that 1,033 people have been evacuated so far of which 334 have been sent to hospital and 700 have been sent to the quarantine centre. Jain said that 24 cases have been found to be positive for coronavirus.

The Markaz, also known as Banglewali Masjid, is a six-storey building complex that can house up to 2,000 people. It shares its wall with the Nizamuddin police station and is adjacent to the famous shrine of Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya. Starting March 13 there was meeting held here with peopel from Kashmir to Andaman islands attending it, besides Saudis, Thais, Indonesians, that has seen already six alone die in Telangan after their return.

According to Delhi Police sources, with the assistance of the Health Department around 800 people have been shifted from the Markaz building in Nizaumuddin to hospitals. Around 300 people are yet to be evacuated.

Intense sanitization is underway in the Nizamuddin basti area. The Jawaharlal Nehru stadium is also being prepared as a contingency plan for creating capacity for isolation.
