Srinagar: Security forces on Friday killed a terrorists linked to J&K Islamic State terror outfit in an encounter that lasted for a few hours in Shopian district.
A senior police official said that the security forces began a cordon and search operation in Amshipora village of Shopian following an information about the presence of some terrorists there.
“As the security cordon tightened, the hiding terrorists resorted to firing at the security forces triggering an encounter in which one terrorists was killed,” said the police official.
He said that the neutralised terrorist has been identified as Ishfaq Ahmed Sofi alias Abdullah Bhai, belonging to Sopore in Baramulla district.
The police official said that Sofi, who joined the terrorist ranks in in 2015, was involved in a number of attacks on the security including some in Srinagar city.
Talking to media, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh said Sofi had been once been arrested when he was associated with the Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen but later on, he had joined the Islamic State-inspired group.
He also said that during the gunfight in Amshipora, another terrorist had managed to escape.
