Twenty drown as boat capsizes in UP’s Bhagpat

Lucknow: At least 20 people were killed and some more feared drowned in the Yamuna river as a boat capsized on Thursday in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat, police said.

Those rescued have been admitted to a nearby medical facility

Sources said that the overcrowded boat heading for Haryana had the capacity of 30 and at least 60 people were on the boat when the mishap occurred.

Immediatly after the incident, the police, Provincial Armed Constabulary divers and the NDRF team reached the accident spot and began the rescue operations, said an official.

So far, 15 people have been rescued by the NDRF and the police and 15 others swam to safety.

The rescue team has fished out 12 bodies with another 12 odd still untraceable, said an offcial.

Those rescued have been admitted to a nearby medical facility.

A villagers claimed that due to overcrowding the boat tragedy occurred.
