New Delhi: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Friday asked if the saffron colour belongs to Hindus. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister’s statement came over the controversy over the movie ‘Pathaan’, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.

“A controversy erupted over wearing saffron-coloured clothes in Shah Rukh Khan’s new film (Pathaan). Does it mean that saffron belongs to Hindus and green belongs to Muslims? What is this? Cow belongs to Hindus and ox belongs to Muslims?” Abdullah asked.
Pathaan’s song ‘Besharam Rang’ surrounded itself with controversy after Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra fumed over the use of saffron costumes in the song.
The minister claimed the film has some objectionable scenes and threatened to ban the movie in Madhya Pradesh if the scenes were not dropped.
Right-wing outfit Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) also strongly objected to Deepika Padukone’s saffron outfit and some scenes in the song.
Expressing displeasure, the group demanded immediate changes to the movie and the song.
