Three terrorists killed in Srinagar encounter; Policeman martyred

Srinagar: A day after the fourth and last phase of local bodies elections concluded in the state, security forces succeeded in killing at least three terrorists in a fierce encounter in old city area of Srinagar on Wednesday.

According to a police official, on receiving information about presence of some terrorists in Fateh Kadal area, a cordon and search operation was launched by the forces early in the morning.

The police official said that as the security cordon tightened, the holed up terrorists resorted to heavy firing to break the security cordon and escape.

“Though a policeman was fatally injured and three CRPF jawans received bullet injures, the security forces retaliated to terrorists fire and in the ensuing gun battle, three terrorists were neutralised,” said the police official.

He said that the injured policeman died before he could be taken to a hospital, the other three injured CRPF jawans were shifted to a hospital where their condition is stated to be stable.

The policeman martyred in the encounter has been identified as Kamal KIshore and he belonged to Reasi district of Jammu region.

The identity of the slain terrorists has been established. One of them was Mehraj Bangroo, a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist active in the valley for over two years. Where as the other one had recently joined LeT terror outfit.

The identity of the third terrorist is being established, the said the police official adding that a large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from the house where the terrorists were killed.

Though the joint operation carried by the Army, J&K Police and the CRPF has now concluded, a search was still on as there were reports of some more terrorists hiding in the area, said the police official.

Meanwhile, three policemen, including a senior officer, were injured along with a civilian on Wednesday in a grenade attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police sources said.

Terrorists hurled the grenade at a police checkpost in Pattan town, injuring a Deputy Superintendent of Police, a Constable, a Special Police Officer and a civilian, said sources.
