IPS officer’s brother among 3 terrorists killed in J&K’s Shopian encounter

Srinagar: Three terrorists including the brother of an IPS officer were killed in a fierce encounter with the security force in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday morning.

Security forces have recovered AK series rifles and large quantity of ammunition from the encounter site

A senior police official said that the encounter began following a cordon and search operation by a joint team of army’s 44RR, 23Para and SOG in Shopian’s Heff Shermal village where four to five terrorists were believed to be hiding.

Among the three neutralised terrorists is Shamsul Mengnoo, the younger brother of Inamul Haq Mengnoo, a 2012 batch IPS officer posted in India’s northeast. Shamsul was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Unani medicine in a Srinagar college before joining a terrorist group. He was a resident of Draggud village of Shopian.

The police official said that a soldier was injured during the course of encounter and was immediately shifted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be stable.

Security forces have recovered AK series rifles and large quantity of ammunition from the encounter site.

Till reports last came in the operation was on in the area with internet facility blocked to prevent spreading of rumours.
