CWC unanimously names Sonia Gandhi as interim Congress President
New Delhi: After day-long drama, Sonia Gandhi’s coterie trumped Rahul Gandhi’s Young Turk to appoint her as the interim Congress President.
A formal announcement to this effect was made by senior Congress leader and CWC member Ghulam Nabi Azad late Saturday night.
”Sonia Gandhi is the new Congress president,” Ghulam Nabi Azad said after emerging out of the CWC meeting.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) — the highest decision-making body of the party, finally accepted Rahul’s resignation at its second meeting of the day.
Sonia Gandhi, who is ailing and had stepped down as party President in December 2017, will again head the party as an interim measure. Her name was announced at the Congress Working Committee meeting, which ended its second session of deliberations after more than two hours.
Sharing more details, Congress leader PL Punia said, ”We have decided to have Sonia Gandhi as the interim president of the party….we will have a full-time president after our internal elections.”
Sonia Gandhi was present during the meeting, which was was called to take a final decision on basis of the suggestions made by state leaders and the leaders representing five zonal units after their day-long discussion.
