Srinagar: Four terrorists were killed on Monday morning by the alert security forces in retaliatory fire as the terrorists made a futile bid to attack a CRPF camp at Sumbal in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The neutralised terrorists were all from across the border. However, the terror organisation to which they all were associated is still to be established, said a senior CRPF official.

Giving details of the attack, CRPF Inspector General (IG) Ravideep Sahi told reporters the terrorists hurled grenades and used heavy volume of automatic gunfire to enter the camp around 4.35 am.

He said that all the four terrorists were engaged in a gunfight which lasted for nearly an hour.

The CRPF official said that all the terrorists were neutralised 10-15 yards away from the camp’s fencing.

Four AK rifles, one under-barrel grenade launcher and large quantity ammunition, cans full of patrol were recovered from the slain terrorists.

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of police (DGP) SP Vaid tweeted about the incident, commending the alertness of CRPF troopers and the state police.

No loss was reported from the CRPF side, added the CRPF official.

The Sumbal camp of the CRPF is the headquarters of the 45th Battalion which was headed by Chetan Kumar Cheeta, who survived despite taking nine bullets while fighting militants in Bandipora in 2016.

The search operation is still on in the area.
