Need to repopulate unoccupied areas near border: CDS General Anil Chauhan

Dehradun: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Saturday stressed on the need to repopulate the unoccupied areas near border in Uttarakhand and added that if repopulation isn’t possible then such areas should be made tourist hubs.

His comments have come in the wake of a clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers at Tawang sector

While speaking at an event, General Chauhan said, “In Uttarakhand, there are vast unoccupied areas which are even far away from the last villages of the state towards the border. We have to see if we can repopulate these areas and if that is problematic, we have to see if we can popularise border tourism there.”

His comments have come in the wake of a clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers at Tawang sector along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has used steel slag to construct over one kilometre stretch of a road connecting the Sino-India border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Kurung Kumey district.

The road to the Sino-India border in Kurung Kumey district connects Joram and district headquarters Koloriang via Palin in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) of Border Roads Organization (BRO)’s Project Arunank used steel slag to construct the one-kilometre stretch of National Highway 713 on Thursday, an official said.

The steel slag material was given by Tata Steel Ltd free of cost and transported from Jamshedpur to Arunachal Pradesh by Indian Railways free of cost.
