Srinagar: An Army jawan was killed on Thursday evening during an encounter that broke out between terrorists and security forces in Pulwama district of south Kashmir.
Director General of Police SP Vaid confirmed that a soldier has been killed in an encounter with terrorists in Pampore area of Pulwama district.
He, however, refused to share any more information about the encounter which according sources was still on.
According to a police official, on receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in Samboora village near Pampore town in Pulwama on Thursday evening, the security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation.
“As the security forces closed on the hiding terrorists they were fired upon and retaliated, triggering a fierce gunfight,” said the police official.
He said that , one body, believed to be that of a terrorist, could be seen lying on the ground from a distance.
The identity of the slain terrorists is still to be established.
The police official added that there were at least two to three terrorists still hiding in the village.
Till reports last came in exchange of fire was on with more security enforcement having reached the spot to plug the possible escape route for the hiding terrorists.
